Rebecca’s Tent began during a harsh winter in 1983, when Rabbi Mark Wilson of Congregation Shearith Israel saw the urgent need for a safe space for women experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. Partnering with Helen Spiegel, a Holocaust survivor who deeply understood the pain of displacement, they opened one of the first women’s shelters in Atlanta and the first shelter housed in a synagogue in the United States.
From its humble beginnings, Rebecca’s Tent grew to offer more than just shelter. Services expanded to include empowerment workshops, career and financial coaching, health education, and conflict resolution training. A year-round case management program was also introduced, providing former residents with ongoing support, community referrals, and resources to build independent lives.
In 2015, the shelter was renamed Rebecca’s Tent to better connect with the wider community, and in 2018, it became Rebecca’s Tent, Spiegel Women’s Shelter at Shearith Israel, honoring its founders, Helen and Frank Spiegel. Today, Rebecca’s Tent continues to operate as an independent nonprofit, empowering women to achieve self-sufficiency with the support of generous volunteers, donors, and community partners.
